Working My Way Back  ...and Forward

Theater for Therapists

 Friday, September 29, 2017            1:00 PM - 5:30 PM
4 CE hours

Presented by  Ed Gutfreund, LPCC

You are invited to the second presentation of Working My Way Back...and Forward, an engaging learning experience designed as to inform therapists, and to encourage them to think broadly and creatively as they work with some of the most challenging conditions of people's emotional, mental and social health.

This one-person musical play brings a clinical "case study" to life. The client's narrative and songs express the confusion and painful complexity of his intra-psychic and relational struggles with current and developmental trauma that have brought his life almost to a standstill.

Working My Way Back...and Forward also tells the story of the evolving client/therapist relationship. Using both conventional therapeutic principles and body-centered methods, the therapist gets support from a colleague to maintain his best perspective in this complex case. He finds ways to respond when the therapeutic relationship needs repair or refinement. Each of them changes in the course of the therapy, as a result of increased awareness and actions taken to support healing and growth.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

* Expand and deepen their theoretical understanding of trauma to include the Structural Dissociation Model of phase-oriented treatment working with "parts."

* Practice mindful somatic interventions which expand clients' awareness, and provide resources for regulating nervous system activation and changing relationship to psychophysical memory states.

* Recognize and use their own countertransference responses to benefit the client's progress, as well as to avoid secondary trauma response in themselves.

* Discover new questions to study for their ongoing learning and development.
