You are invited to the second presentation of Working My
Way Back...and Forward, an engaging learning experience designed as to inform
therapists, and to encourage them to think broadly and creatively as they work
with some of the most challenging conditions of people's emotional, mental and
This one-person musical play brings a clinical "case
study" to life. The client's narrative and songs express the confusion and
painful complexity of his intra-psychic and relational struggles with current
and developmental trauma that have brought his life almost to a standstill.
Working My Way Back...and Forward also tells the story of
the evolving client/therapist relationship. Using both conventional therapeutic
principles and body-centered methods, the therapist gets support from a
colleague to maintain his best perspective in this complex case. He finds ways
to respond when the therapeutic relationship needs repair or refinement. Each
of them changes in the course of the therapy, as a result of increased
awareness and actions taken to support healing and growth.
* Expand and deepen their theoretical understanding of
trauma to include the Structural Dissociation Model of phase-oriented treatment
working with "parts."
* Practice mindful somatic interventions which expand
clients' awareness, and provide resources for regulating nervous system
activation and changing relationship to psychophysical memory states.
* Recognize and use their own countertransference responses
to benefit the client's progress, as well as to avoid secondary trauma response
* Discover new questions to study for their ongoing learning
Presenter: Ed Gutfruend
Ed Gutfreund, PCC, LMT, has worked for over 25 years to
integrate aspects of mind and body into therapy and and therapist education.
His approach is drawn from theory and practice of Hakomi, Sensorimotor
Psychotherapy, PsychoPhysical Therapy, Structural Dissociation, massage
therapy, movement studies, spiritual practice, creativity studies and artistic
activity to support and enhance effective therapy and enlivening learning.
